ROUTES: 4TH STAGE REGIONAL MIGRATION (LAGO DE OMAÑA – ABELGAS DE LUNA)

A while ago I wrote about Regional Migration and more specifically, about a migration made by a farming family from León. We still have one stage left to reach the end of this migration: Lago de Omaña – Albelgas de Luna, the most physically demanding.

Below are links to previous articles on this route provided here as a reference.

Just a note before we begin this next adventure: there is a map and a file of the route which you can download at the end of the article. Please remember that this information is merely representative so if you decide to do this route, we strongly recommend you equip yourselves with a map and compass or GPS.

BEACHES: SAN ANTONIO DEL MAR BEACH

In the previous article I wrote about a route which runs through the beaches of Cuevas del Mar and San Antonio del Mar (St Anthony of the Sea), the latter being the subject of this article.

You cannot reach the San Antonio del Mar Beach by car, but you can by bicycle or on foot.

It is a beach of singular beauty; it is clean and peaceful, set in the middle of the countryside far from civilisation and noise.

ROUTES: CUEVAS DEL MAR BEACH – SAN ANTONIO DEL MAR BEACH

In previous articles I wrote about a few beaches. But summertime is not just about beaches, it is also a time to enjoy some wonderful walks.

A good example is the walk recommended in today’s article, a perfect combination of a bit of hill-walking with a stroll along a beach or two… as the route runs through the beaches of: Cuevas del Mar (Caves of the Sea) and San Antonio del Mar (St. Anthony of the Sea)

It’s a very short walk but it is also quite lovely. You’ll soon be enjoying fresh air, nature and fauna…

As you move uphill along the trail, you will see the amazing cliffs of the area where you’ll find the Shrine of Saint Anthony, set in the Cabo de Mar (Sea Cove).

BEACHES: CUEVAS DEL MAR BEACH

In the previous article I wrote about a small but tremendously beautiful beach, Guadamía Beach. This time I’d like to tell you about one of the many other beaches in the municipality of Llanes, Cuevas del Mar Beach.

Unlike Guadamía Beach, Cuevas del Mar Beach does not owe its name to the river that runs into it, River de Nueva, but rather to the caves that are found in the rocks on this beach, caused by sea erosion.

This beach in Llanes can be reached by car and apart from being beautiful it is sheltered from the wind thanks to its shell-like form, making it ideal for a fantastic day on the beach.

BEACHES: GUADAMÍA BEACH

As many of you will know, the east coast of Asturias is of unparallel beauty, which explains why this area is chosen as the setting for film shoots.

Thanks to film, we know of a lot of hidden corners along the coast of eastern Asturias, but there are still quite many that are not so well known. A clear example is Guadamía Beach, found in the municipality of Llanes.

The municipalities of Ribadesella and Llanes are divided along the coast by the River Guadamía, which gives its name to this lovely beach.

The access to Guadamía Beach is very good and can be reached by car – well not right up to the beach itself, you have to walk down some 50m to it. Frankly, it’s a beach that even if I had to walk several kilometres to get there, I would do so with pleasure. As always, there is a map at the end of the article where you’ll find this beach in Llanes.

ROUTES: 3rd STAGE REGIONAL MIGRATION (LAS OMAÑAS – LAGO)

We continue with our “Regional Migration” adventure. In previous posts, I gave you the first two stages of this route:

1st Stage.

2nd Stage.

As I mentioned, we were on a route that takes several days to do which is somewhat special in the company of a family of shepherds that are transporting over 1000 sheep on foot.

This stage is a half-day, and takes places along beautiful villages and mainly through the mountainside with its spectacular views to enjoy.

Of the three days that we have covered, this is the loveliest, although we still have the forth stage left to do, perhaps the hardest, but also the most spectacular.

HIKING

Sendero de Pequeño Recorrido

The good weather is here and we feel like going for walks in the countryside.

There are many people who like to experience what the mountain has to offer and enjoy a day out mountaineering. But another group of people prefers to enjoy nature in a less-tasking way, for example, with hikes. Hiking is highly recommendable for people who do not tend to do much sport and you can enjoy walking through the countryside with the family.

I will describe below what hiking is, although many of you will already know what it entails: a non-competitive sporting activity which is carried out along marked, traditional footpaths in the countryside.

TURISMO NATURAL ON YOUR MOBILE

mobile - iphone

How many times have we set off on holiday or on a weekend escape and when we are about to arrive at our destination we want to call our hotel or rural hotel – wherever it is we are staying and we find we haven’t written down either the name or the telephone of the place?

Or, you’re somewhere in Spain and you want to visit a particular monument or route…but you don’t quite know what and you don’t have a computer at hand to find these things out with; or the only thing you want to do is to surf Turismo Natural because you love its content.

There are endless situations, but I don’t want to necessarily bore you so I’ll go straight to the point: Turismo Natural can now be read on mobile telephones.

What do we gain by doing this? Quite simply, you can check out our blog from where-ever you are as soon as you connect to internet.

ROUTES: 2nd STAGE – REGIONAL MIGRATION (SAN PELAYO – LAS OMAÑAS)

Before I begin, I’d like to tell you that I shan’t name all the villages that we have passed through because they are quite a lot but they will be indicated in the map found at the end of this article.

If you were surprised in the 1st stage of the number of sheep that made up the flock, over 600, then imagine this stage with over 1000 sheep and walking along narrow village lanes…

The adventure continues!

Dawn is breaking and we are already on our way. There are many sheep, so the organisation has been thorough to ensure that everything goes well. Meanwhile, two Spanish mastiff pups play together, quite unaware of what will be, probably, their own future in a few years’ time.

The stage ahead, for me, is one of the hardest on a psychological level: monotonous landscape, very flat land…you always see a very similar horizon and you can’t perceive the end of the stage. It feels like an eternity, but this time it was different.

ROUTES: 1st STAGE ON REGIONAL SEASONAL MIGRATION. (SOTO DE LA VEGA – SAN PELAYO)

The preparations begin with the shepherd putting the bells on the sheep. The flock, the Spanish mastiffs and the sheepdog know that they are about to set out on an adventure and you sense the group is restless.

It’s time to go and we’re off!

We hope we will have a good walk without any mishaps, given that there are many kilometres ahead and we have to adjust to the rhythm, but…the sheep are very keen to reach their destination. It’s impossible to do the entire route in one day, so it is spread out over four stages, this being the first leg of the journey: Soto de la Vega – San Pelayo (León).

This stage takes only half a day, just enough for us to adapt little by little to the group, to distinguish the Spanish mastiffs and the sheepdog, which are working non-stop from the very beginning.

As we advance along the route, we pass poplar groves which are exceptionally green thanks to the rainfall this year; we cross over River Órbigo, which is quite high at the moment, along the Paulón Bridge.
